View: From a spacious and sunny balcony, there is a panoramic and unobstructed 140 degree view of the Mediterranean Sea.

Amenities: an extremely large pool (generally open Easter week into October) restricted to Penoncillo owners and guests, tennis court, and extensive irrigated gardens loaded with roses and bright tropical vegetation and maintained by the community gardener on a daily basis, free parking at the back door or in a nearby lot, two lifts serve the rental unit.

Features: Lounge/living room with huge Sea view, double bedroom with huge Sea view (guests may "hear the waves rolling on the beach"), bath with small Sea view, kitchen with small Sea View and with adjoining tenderero for drying swimsuits, three large closets including a large larder in the kitchen, and long entry hall.

Wi-Fi: There is free Wi-Fi almost directly across the street for customers at a great beach restaurant-bar El Ancla.  The third party report states, "Torrox/ Penoncillo El Ancla bar, FREE wifi Keith and Beryl are very helpful and didn't mind me having one coke, and great food, children very welcome."

Our condo complex of four 7-story, well designed blocks is on a breezy hillside location on the very long Penoncillo Beach (a delightful 7 minute walk down a sweeping drive). We have a quiet location very near the Andalusian tourist center of Nerja (a 5 minute drive). We've named our place "El Refugio" for the solitude it comfortably provides.

Yet, just a few minutes away are the Costa del Sol tourist facilities and fast times we all enjoy during a beach holiday. We are 6 minutes from the Torrox exit of the Malaga-Nerja super highway, a 2 minute drive (20 minute walk) from the growing tourist restaurant and shop area of Torrox Costa, 40 minutes from the Malaga airport, 1.75 hours to the fabled Alhambra at Granada (for tickets: www.alhambra-tickets.es or telephone 0034 934 923 750 the operators speak English, French an Spanish), 2 hours drive to Gibraltar, and 2.5 hours to Tarifa for the ferries to Morocco. We are within day trip range of Malaga (as of August 2007, guided Malaga tour on an open topped bus that starts from Malaga bus station may be booked on-line at http://www.hostelworld.com/tours/tourdetails.php/TourUID.931), the great cathedral at Seville, the Moorish mosquita-cathedral at Cordoba, and the cliffside Ronda.

The owners recommend use of a rental car to take in all the area offers, including drives through the countryside to nearby Competa and Frigiliana as well as longer drives at least to Granada. However, frequent public bus service at the foot of the Penoncillo apartment complex driveway is available to Nerja, Torrox Costa and all points beyond (see http://www.continental-auto.es/index.do). The bus to Nerja from the apartment is a 10 minute trip that runs hourly during the day and costs about 0.82E. Summer 2005 guests said, "There's a direct [Nerja-Granada bus] several times a day. The journey takes 2 hours - as does Granada-Malaga (buses every hour)." Transport from Malaga Airport in 2007 was as little as 4.60 Euros: The bus (1 Euro) or train from Malaga airport to a point near the Malaga bus station with Alsina Graells bus service (3.60 Euros) to the foot of the drive way for the apartment.  Malaga features frequent rail service to and from Madrid and provides service to Cordoba, Seville, Ronda, and La Linea near Gibraltar. Travel bureaus on Calle Pintada and elsewhere in Nerja and the tourist offices in Nerja (near the Balcony of Europe) and Torrox Costa (in the Bau Hoffman complex) offer details of extremely reasonably priced bus-hotel-meals tours to Andalusian tourist centers. Some guests arrange stays in excellent state-owned paradors (many in ancient castles) before or after their stay at owners' beach place. Paradore Hotels website: www.paradores-spain.com.  Owners understand as of November 2007 there is a "5 Day Card" whereby 2 persons can stay 5 nights (not necessarily consecutively) in Paradore Hotels for 450 Euros.

There are excellent hiking trails in the seaside hills directly behind Penoncillo. Walk high enough and find the avocado and almond groves and be rewarded with terrific views of the Sea and to Nerja, Torrox and beyond. Some say Africa and Gibraltar may be seen on extremely clear days.  The Nerja Touist office near the Balcon will, if you ask, give you for free a hiking trail map; the stamina-requiring trail up the Rio Chilar from Nerja to a pool with waterfall is particularly good.   

General information:

We ask our guests to bring beach towels for the community pool. Our property manager works from a nearby location and will have the apartment/condo ready for you and arrange for key delivery to you. 

Usually during the off season September-June (although longer terms are negotiable), we offer long-term lets for 475E to 500E PER MONTH (exclusive of energy cost) according to length of stay.

Tip about clicking on "Check availabilty" below: Although the start date of an existing booking is marked as "booked," you can book a period ending on that date and depart on the morning of that date. Payment Instructions:  A 25% deposit is required to confirm weekly bookings.  The balance 6 weeks prior to your arrival.  All amounts are payable in Euros (or other currency that nets the quoted Euro amount after all charges and bank fees).  The rental deposit and other amounts paid are nonrefundable unless we are able to rent the space to other guests.  There is a 40E out-cleaning fee for rentals less than two weeks.  Long term rentals (475E-500E, 377UKP-397UKP, 732US$-772US$/month) may be available.  Payment of the first month's rent and 100E damage deposit is required to confirm long term bookings.
